Docker is a container technology using a well defined format to describe dependences and using processes to isolate running programs. The Docker containers on a host share the same base OS kernel.

A Docker container is more lightweight and, often, faster than a VM.

But the process based approach is not very strong isolation, and the container description can potentially be complex and the mix of software components running on the same kernel can bring in further complication and limitation.

The technology is said to be related to LXC (Linux Container) and RunC.

Overall, I feel it is a technology with limited applicability.
